Art and Culture, Local History

Most seasoned travelers agree that the most important, overriding ingredients in their entire travel experience are the local people and the quality of the interaction they have with them. In the Riviera Nayarit, the history and the overall effect is quadrupled! Four groups of indigenous people have populated the area and made it their home. The Mexicaneros, Tepejuaneroa, Coran and the Huichol all survived the Spanish conquest of the region. As a result, they still live very much like they did “yesterday”, in the days of the past.

Explore the fabulous possibilities to include in Your Perfect Vacation in the Culture category which includes History... Yesterday & Today.

Riviera Nayarit Yesterday

Most seasoned travelers agree that the most important, overriding ingredients in their entire travel experience are the local people and the quality of the interaction they have with them. In the Riviera Nayarit, the history and the overall effect is quadrupled! Four groups of indigenous people have populated the area and made it their home. The Mexicaneros, Tepejuaneroa, Coran and the Huichol all survived the Spanish conquest of the region. As a result, they still live very much like they did “yesterday”, in the days of the past.

Vacationers are most often exposed to the Huichol who are famous for the production of their brilliantly colorful artwork and crafts that are on display and cheerfully purchased in the marketplaces. It is said that the only thing more vibrant than the colors used by the Huichol, are the warmth and hospitality they so readily show to visitors. Set out on an excursion to visit these fascinating people whose customs and lifestyle remain very unchanged to this day!

Riviera Nayarit Today

Tradition with just a touch of modernism is what you will find when setting out to explore the locals and there seaside villages. A combination of fishing and agriculture are predominant, now gently mixed with treasures of artisans and their craftworks that vacationers discover, take home and make part of their lives. Strolling through typical villages children amble to and from school, farmers lead mules loaded with produce, fisherman deliver fresh catches right from their nets and all are surrounded by shops, surfers, sun worshippers and vacationers who have discovered a quaint paradise. Be sure to check out local events like rodeos, holiday festivals and carnivals that highlight today’s culture.
